A head for a friend

Here is my first "helmet head"
I was planning to make a new head for the fox fursuit but was undecided what method to use.  I decided to try using a bicycle helmet for a base and build around that, but first made a prototype to test the concept.  I made this for a friend; he is interested in things African and middle Eastern and likes black.  And so I decided to surprise him with something that was African, middle Eastern and black... an Egyptian Mongoose.  And so I made this head and just gave it to him as a surprise (indeed he was!).  I also supplied him with enough fur to make a complete suit to go with it, which at this time, he is busily working on.  This page shows how I attached the fur and ears.

II started gluing fur onto the muzzle first.

Then onto the face.

Then the lower jaw and the back of the head.  Remember to leave enough fur at the back of the mouth so that the mouth can open without binding.

Here are the ears cut out of 1/8" foam board.  They are made of two layers glued together with a wire form between the layers.  The ends stick out and are sharpened so that they can be simply pushed into the styrofoam of the helmet.  Make sure the wires aren't long enough to go through and poke your head!

Fur has now been glued to the backs of the ears.  The fronts of the edges were built up with hot glue and then the fur rolled over it and trimmed.

Here she is coming along nicely.  The eyes are simply more of the craft mesh glued onto the back of the face and then painted.

Two black Halloween witch wigs were put on the back to let people know that this is a female mongoose.  They are simply pinned into the styrofoam with pins that have large black heads.  There is one on each side with a seam down the back where they overlap.  After brushing, it all looks like one wig.

Another angle.

This is the starting place for making long sexy eyelashes.  Take a nylon bristle paint brush and cut out as many bristles as you need.  This is a Stanley brush and the ends of the bristles are "frazzled" which gives a nice effect.  They are laid out like this and then hot glue it applied in a line at the base (make sure to hold them down with something!).  Finally they are curled using an ordinary hair curling iron.

Sexy eyelashes and hoop earrings have now been added to her.

This shots shows a miscalculation that I did in adding fur.  I did not leave enough in the corner of the mouth and the wire frame is showing.  Fortunately this is easily fixed by adding a patch of fur here: once brushed out, it doesn't show at all.

My friend tries it on for size.  Notice the big smile....hehehehe.
